Literature
The banknotes of the Philippines honor national heroes. Portrayed on the front of the 2-piso note is Jose Rizal, who was executed under the rule of Spain. The vignette on the back of the note depicts the declaration of independence adopted under the revolutionary leader and president of the First Republic, Aguinaldo. Another revolutionary leader, Andres Bonifacio, is portrayed on the 5-piso note, which bears on its back a dramatic depiction of the initiation ceremony of the revolutionaries. The 10-piso note features Apolinario Mabini, known as the brains of the revolution. The 20-piso note depicts Manuel Quezon, first president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. On the 50-piso note is a likeness of President Sergio Osmeña, who returned with the Americans to liberate the islands during World War II. And the engraved portrait on the 100-piso note depicts Manuel Roxas, the first president of the new Republic of the Philippines established in .
The vigorous and elaborate geometric patterning surrounding each portrait is especially noteworthy, as are the watermarks, which duplicate each individual note's portrait. The seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines is also included on the front of each banknote.
