8 Coin Proof Set - Coinage of the Philippines
The 1977 coinage of the Republic of the Philippines includes two coins bearing special commemorative designs to be used only in 1977. The fifty-piso coin, minted in sterling silver, depicts the new Central Bank Security Printing Plant and Mint Complex. This impressive building, with the five-pointed star—the old Spanish mintmark—above, and with two historic coins in the foreground, was inaugurated in 1977. The two coins within a coin are a fifty-centavos coin depicting the figure of Liberty and a one-centavo coin showing a blacksmith seated beside his anvil.
And the new twenty-five-piso coin, minted in .500 fine silver, portrays the famous Banawe Rice Terraces of the Philippines. Rain-fed slopes where rice greens and root crops are grown, some of these terraces date back 3,000 years and are regarded as the eighth wonder of the world.
The remaining coins in the set honor distinguished figures in the nation's proud history. The five-piso coin, for example, pays tribute to Ferdinand E. Marcos, the much-decorated hero of World War II who is today the President of the Philippines.
The immortal Jose Rizal, "Father of Philippine Independence," is depicted on the one-piso coin; and the first Philippine painter to win international fame, Juan Luna, is featured on the twenty-five-sentimo coin. Another national leader was Francisco Baltasar, commemorated on the ten-sentimo coin.
Melchora Aquino, known as the "Mother of the Revolution," is honored on the five-sentimo coin, minted with an unusual scalloped edge. Square with rounded corners, the one-sentimo coin portrays the warrior chieftain Lapulapu who led the resistance to Spanish conquest in the 16th century.
The Philippine coat of arms appears on the reverses of the fifty, twenty-five, five and one-piso coins. The reverses of the four smallest denomination coins carry the seal of the Central Bank, symbolizing the nation's c development
