Proof Set - Coinage of the Philippines

This Proof Set includes two coins minted in silver and bearing new commemorative designs which were issued only in . The sterling silver 50-Piso coin commemorates Pope John Paul II's visit to the Philippines-his first such pilgrimage to an Asian nation. The 25-Piso coin, also newly designed, is minted in .500 fine silver and honors the first World Food Day, sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which was held on .

The other coins in this eight-coin Proof Set honor persons who have played an important part in the nation's history. President Ferdinand E.

Marcos is portrayed on the obverse of the 5-Piso coin, while the great patriot Jose Rizal is depicted on the 1-Piso coin. The seal of the Republic of the Philippines appears on the reverse of both coins.

The portrait on the 25-Sentimo coin is that of Juan Luna, the first Philippine painter to win international acclaim. The national leader Francisco Baltasar is featured on the 10-sentimo coin. Depicted on the 5-Sentimo coin with its distinctive scalloped edge is Melchora Aquino, known as the "mother of the revolution." The square 1-Sentimo coin honors Lapulapu, the warrior chieftain who lead the resistance to the 16-century Spanish conquest of the islands.

The reverses of the four smallest denominations bear the seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines in recognition of the nation's economic development.

If you find it necessary to remove the coins, however, you can do so by separating the layers of the card. Start by using a thin blade to separate the layers at a corner. Continue the separation by peeling the layers to completely apart. Before touching the coins, put on the enclosed protective gloves.
