Proof Set - Coinage of the Philippines
This Proof Set features the sterling silver 50-Piso coin, which bears a special commemorative design to be used only in to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the battles of Bataan and Corregidor. The defense of Bataan and Corregidor by Philippine and American soldiers was one of the most significant and stirring chapters in the history of World War II. This commemorative coin pays tribute to those courageous fighting men. It bears a combined profile portrait that shows Ferdinand Marcos, President of the Philippines and one of his country's most honored war heroes, alongside a proud American soldier. The design thus symbolizes the historic partnership that enabled the Allies to achieve ultimate victory in the South Pacific. The seal of the Republic of the Philippines appears on the reverse.
The other coins in this Proof Set honor persons who have played an important part in the nation's history. President Ferdinand E. Marcos is portrayed on the obverse of the 5-Piso coin, while the great patriot Jose Rizal is depicted on the 1-Piso coin. The seal of the Republic of the Philippines appears on the reverse of both coins.
The portrait on the 25-Sentimo coin is that of Juan Luna, the first Philippine painter to win international acclaim. The national leader Francisco Baltasar is featured on the 10-Sentimo coin. Depicted on the 5-Sentimo coin with its distinctive scalloped edge is Melchora Aquino, known as the “mother of the revolution." The square 1-Sentimo coin honors Lapulapu, the warrior chieftain who led the resistance to the 16th-century Spanish conquest of the islands.
The reverses of the four smallest denominations bear the seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines in recognition of the nation's economic development.
