The Republic of the Philippines
Certificate of Authenticity

The Republic of the Philippines comprises an archipelago of about 7,100 islands and islets in the southwest Pacific Ocean, approximately 800 kilometres off the Southeast Asian mainland. The island group is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea, on the south by the Celebes Sea and on the west and north by the South China Sea. The total land area of the Philippine is 300,000 square kilometres.

The Philippines are rich in wildlife with nearly 500 species of birds, some of which are migrants, and about 220 species of mammals.

Population: 48,098,460
Capital: Manila

Tamarau
(Anoa mindorensis)

Tamaraus, related to the Anoa (Dwarf Buffalo or Wood-ox of Celebes), inhabit areas of dense grass and weed growth on Mindoro Island in the Philippines where they are rare, with probably no more than 200 to 250 still surviving.

Tamaraus grow to about one metre in height and are covered in brown to greyish black hair. They have short, stout horns which can reach up to 50 centimetres in length. They feed mainly upon young cane shoots and various water plants.

Tamataus Have a pronounced dislike of water and neither bathe nor wallow; they will even seek shelter in thick vegetation when it rains.

Because of their wary nature and their secluded environment, little is known of their habits and general biology. They apparently associate in pairs but will gather together when cows are about to give birth or when seeking a shady refuge from the after-noon sun.
