"I have returned!
By the grace of Almighty God, our forces stand again on Philippine soil."
“I have returned!”
General Douglas MacArthur's voice trembled with emotion on , as he spoke these words from "Red Beach" on Leyte Island. Keeping the promise he had made two and a half years earlier — when President Franklin Roosevelt ordered him to leave Corregidor — MacArthur and his men returned to liberate the Philippines from the Japanese. Displayed in this I Have Returned Commemorative Set are four collectors items issued by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a key battlefield of World War II. Together, they capture the drama of that historic moment 50 years ago, when America fulfilled its promise to the people of the Philippines. The imperforate Souvenir Sheet features two 50₵ stamps, one designed by Howard Koslow, the other by David K. Stone. Koslow's MacArthur Evacuated from Corregidor shows a striking profile of MacArthur, as well as the PT boat and bomber he used to elude the Japanese naval blockade around Luzon on the night of . Arriving in Australia on , MacArthur vowed “I shall return.” Stone's MacArthur Returns to the Philippines depicts MacArthur and Philippine President-in-exile Sergio Osmeña wading ashore at Leyte on . The accompanying 29₵ stamp inspired the stamp on the left side of the Souvenir Sheet. The MacArthur Returns to the Philippines 52₵ issue inspired the stamp on the right side of the Souvenir Sheet. The Heroes of the Philippines $10 Commemorative Coin was designed by David K. Stone. This brilliant uncirculated, solid brass coin also shows MacArthur wading ashore at Leyte Island as he makes his famous "return."
