What is World Youth Day?

It all began when the United Nations sponsored an International Year of the Youth. The call was for all nations to elevate the youth and their concerns to the highest level of societal priorities. His Holiness, Pope John Paul II met with the young people that year and later formally inaugurated World Youth Day.

From , World Youth Day is celebrated every year: one year in a country chosen by the Pope and the next year in Rome during the Palm Sunday celebration.

For the celebration of World Youth Day in Manila, the Holy Father has given the theme:

"As the Father sent me, so I am sending you"
[John 20:21]
