Central banking in the Philippines traces its roots to 3 January 1949 when the Central Bank of the Philippines opened for business, following the passage of Republic Act 265. After 44 years, CBP gave way to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, an independent central monetary authority, which opened for business on 3 July 3 1993 under Republic Act 7653. The mandate for Congress to create an independent central monetary authority that gave birth to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas emanated from The 1987 Philippine Constitution.
