Note : The UP. College of Law Centennial: Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence in Law 1911-2011

The University of the Philippines College of Law is on the eve of one of its momentous occasions - the celebration of its first one hundred years of existence. Since its establishment in 1911, the UP. Law has maintained its stature as the premiere law institution in providing quality legal education to the country's scholars and in pioneering legal and policy research and development.

Indeed, the past century in Philippine history has seen an abundance of U.P. Law graduates who have helped shaped the country's social and political arena. Malcolm Hall has produced a number of presidents, vice presidents, senators, congressmen, judges, and Justices of the Supreme Court, proving the College's commitment to academic excellence and service to the public.

It is for this reason that the year 2011, by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 32 of President Benigno S. Aquino III, has been declared as the "University of the Philippines College of Law Centennial Year.11 With the theme "The College of Law and the Challenges of Philippine Law at the Beginning of the Second Century" the Centennial celebration officially began in January 2011 as the U.P. Law celebrated its centennial month. At the helm of the U.P. Law Centennial Commission, various activities are prepared and organized for the U.P. Law community and its alumni to celebrate 100 years of excellence in law.

In the words of the U.P. Law's 13th Dean, Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, this important commemoration is "not only to celebrate U.P. Law's distinctive history, but also to renew the institution's commitment as the country's bastion of legal education and research."

Continuing the initiatives of his predecessor, current U.P. Law Dean, Danilo L. Concepcion, underscored that this occasion should serve both as a celebration and as a challenge to the College to continue its excellence in teaching law in the grand manner and to further surpass its long list of achievements for the next hundred years.
