Note : Melchora Aquino earned the title "Mother of Katipunan" for her heroic contributions to the Philippine revolution against Spain. When the war broke out in 1896, she was already 84 years old, hence, she was called Tandang Sora."

This Filipino revolutionary was born on January 6, 1812 in Banlat, Quezon City. She had very little education, but had the qualities of a literate and highly intelligent person. Widowed early, she opened a store to support her six children.

Melchora used her store as a means to provide the revolutionaries with medical care. She not only gave them medical attention but also encouraged them with prayers and motherly advice. Many revolutionaries sought refuge in her store and held secret meetings at her home.

When the Spaniards arrested her, she refused to provide any information about the revolutionaries. She was exiled in the Marianas Islands.

She returned to the Philippines In 1898 during the American regime. She died on March 2, 1919 at the age of 107.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas pays tribute to this selfless hero with a Tandang Sora commemorative medal in honor of her 200th birth anniversary in 2012. The central bank had previously depicted her image on a 100-peso bill of the English series banknotes which circulated in 1949-1957. A Quezon City road and district are also named after her.
