Note : Andress Bonifacio was born in Tondo, Manila on November 30, 1863. He is the oldest of four brothers and two sisters. Their parents were Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro.
Orphaned at an early age, he and his siblings made canes and paper fans and sold them to make a living.
He worked as a clerk-messenger in Fleming and Co., a British commercial firm where he learned the rudiments of the English language. Later, he also worked at Fressel and Co., a German commercial firm.
On July 7, 1892, Bonifacio together with Ladislao Diwa, Teodoro Plata, and Deodato Arellano founded the Katipunan in Azcarraga, Tondo.
In April 1895, Bonifcacio brought a band of Katipuneros to the Montalban Hills, initiating some new members in the area. In the Pamitinan Cave, the band assembled. Using charcoal, Bonifacio scratched on the walls the words: Viva La Independencia de Filipinas! This was one of the cries of the Filipinos for liberty and independence.
On August 23, 1896 in the yard of Juan Ramos, son of Tandang Sora, Bonifacio and his men decided to start the armed uprising. There, they tore their cedulas to symbolize their determination to finally rise up in arms and to free the country from Spanish rule. They shouted “Long Live the Philippines”
