The Republic of the Philippines
The Philippines is an island nation consisting of more than 7,000 islands that extend for Over 1,000 miles in the Pacific Ocean off the Coast of Asia. Only about 780 of these islands are inhabited, for many are merely tiny patches of rock, the largest being Luzon where the capital City of Manila is located.
Settled by Spain during the 16th century, the Philippines remained under Spanish domination until . That year marked the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, as a result of which the Philippines were ceded to the United States. In the commonwealth of the Philippines was established with Manuel Quezon as the first president.
After Quezon died during World War II, a Memorial in his honor was erected in Quezon City. This memorial is depicted on the Sterling Silver Proof medal, the United Nations' Official Medallic tribute to the Philippines, which became a charter member in .
In the Philippines became completely independent from the United States and, with Manuel Roxas as president, was officially declared the Republic of the Philippines. Ferdinand E. Marcos is now the island Nation's chief executive, and when a new Constitution was adopted in , he was named president for the remainder of his life.
Because of their balmy climate and fertile soil, the Philippines are among the world's leading producers of rice, coconuts and sugar. Many of the islands have extensive forests, and Philippine mahogany has become an important export. The islands are also a source of gold, copper and other minerals, and many Filipinos earn their livelihood by fishing in the surrounding waters.
