Literature

The USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser for the US Navy, she is superbly equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions.

The USS Philippine Sea was named after the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the decisive naval battle towards the end of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The Battle of the Philippine Sea was significant in that it helped eliminate the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ability to conduct large-scale carrier actions. It took place during the United States’ amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands . The battle was the last of five major “carrier-versus-carrier” engagements between American and Japanese naval forces.

Commissioned on , the USS Philippine Sea has a displacement of approximately 9,600 long tons and stretches some 567 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home of two Seahawk LAMPS III helicopters.

This coin pays tribute to the USS Philippine Sea and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse features the seal of the USS Philippine Sea. The reverse displays the United States Navy logo.

Minted in solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality in incredible detail.
