Issued to commemorate the 50th Birth anniversary of Doctor Jose Rizal. On January 8, 1908, Carlo Nicoli of Carrara, Italy won the design contest first price for his scaled plaster model titled "Al Mártir de Bagumbayan". For some reason the contract was awarded to second-placer Swiss sculptor named Richard Kissling for his "Motto Stella" (Guiding Star). Built using bronze and granite in 1912 and inaugurated on December 30, 1913.
