The U.P. College of Law Centennial Celebration:
Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence in Law -
The University of the Philippines College of Law is on the eve of one of its most momentous occasions - the celebration of its first one hundred years of existence. Since its establishment in , U.P. Law has maintained its stature as the premier law institution in providing quality legal education to the country’s scholars and in pioneering legal and policy research and development.
Indeed, the past century in Philippine history has seen an abundance of U.P. Law graduates who have helped shape the country’s social and political arena. Malcolm Hall has borne a number of presidents, vice presidents, senators, congressmen, judges and Justices of the Supreme Court, proving the College’s commitment to academic excellence and service to the public.
It is for this reason that the year , by virtue of
Presidential Proclamation No. 32 of President Benigno S. Aquino III, has been declared as the “University of the Philippines College of Law Centennial Year.” The entire U.P. Law community, along with its alumni, celebrate 100 years of excellence in law, with various Centennial activities, prepared and organized by the U.P. Law Centennial Commission, officially began in as U.P. Law celebrated its centennial month. The Centennial Celebration has been given the theme, “The College of Law and the Challenges to Philippine Law at the Beginning of its Second Century.”
This important commemoration, in the words of U.P. Law Dean, Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, is “not only to celebrate U.P. Law’s distinctive history, but also to renew the institution’s commitment as the country’s bastion of legal education and research.” This occasion indeed serves both as a celebration and as a challenge to the College to continue its excellence in teaching law in the grand manner and to further surpass its long list of achievements for the next one hundred years.
In commemoration of this, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has issued 100-peso banknotes with the overprint of the U.P. Law Centennial logo.
The logo, overprinted on the watermark space to the right President Manuel Acuna Roxas’ portrait, symbolizes “academic excellence, leadership and service to the nation.”
The purple and white 100-peso note is the most commonly used purchasing bill.
Its front features the bust of Manuel Acuna Roxas, a U.P. Law alumnus and the first President of the independent Republic of the Philippines in .
To the right is the flag of the Philippine Republic rising as the American flag is lowered symbolizing a new
The hack of the note depicts the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas buildings.
